There are different options for getting treatment, depending on whether you receive your health care through the VA health care system or through other health care providers in the community.
FIND TREATMENT IN THE VA HEALTH CARE SYSTEM
- VA is the nation’s leading provider of evidence-based psychotherapies, like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. VA has trained more than 10,000 providers in these treatments.
- Treatment is provided at reduced or no cost.
- If you are not enrolled in the VA health care system, you may find out about eligibility and enroll online.
Step 1: Find VA Treatment
- Find your local VA treatment facility.
- Call or visit your local VA facility and request a mental health appointment. An initial contact appointment is generally provided within 24 hours. Or, schedule an appointment with your primary care provider who can help connect you to treatment.
- If you would like to speak with someone to learn about treatment at a VA facility near you, you may lookup the Mental Health Point of Contact at your local VA facility.
Step 2: Request Evidence-Based Psychotherapy

- Many private mental health providers in the community deliver evidence-based psychotherapies.
- Some of these providers accept insurance or provide reduced-fee services. Community mental health centers usually offer reduced or no-fee services.
Step 1: Find Treatment Providers in the Community
- Find community treatment options in your area. It is recommended to find more than one option to explore, if available in your area.
- Community treatment options include:
- Private practitioners (e.g. psychologists, social workers, licensed professional counselors) who work in a private office or group practice.
- Publicly funded community mental health centers.
Step 2: Contact Treatment Providers
- Call identified treatment providers to inquire about availability, cost of services, whether they accept insurance if you have insurance, and other questions.
- Discuss your preference for “evidence-based psychotherapy” (for example, “Cognitive Behavioral Therapy”).
- Bring information from this website with you to your first visit, including initial goals for treatment, if you completed this exercise.
